There is a lot of diamond here but you also have to dig through a lot of rough to get to it. Gameplay wise this is a decent FPS. The zone feels brutal and melancholy. The visuals still look pretty good and the action can be quite brutal. With some great enemy types as well as environmental dangers the world really does feel desolate. By far the biggest problem is the bugs and glitches that litter the game. There are a lot of technical issues from frame hitching, to random crashes, to corrupting saves amongst the problems. Save often, and back the saves up - this will save a lot of frustrations. Of course the other option is to grab one of the many free mods available that patch a lot of the bugs as well as add some extra polish to an already great classic. And as an added bonus there is still even people playing MP!So for the money SHOC still provides a massive amount of game and replayability, just be prepared to take the rough with the smooth.. Just finished my first play-through on master difficulty and I've got to say, this game wasn't worth the time or money. The raving fan-base will have you believe that you are in for a challenging, atmospheric FPS. In my experience, that was not at all the case. Allow me to expand:-The gun play is frustrating. Until you get a gun with a scope, you simply need to pray that your bullets will go where you want them to go. Even with a scope, bullet spread is random at best. -The AI is hilariously broken. You can simply run past enemies to get to where you need to go. Also the quicksave\/quickload feature causes enemies to bug out and not register your existence sometimes. It's pretty entertaining to watch 7 dudes walk single file down a narrow hall, right past you, shouting but not shooting. -The somewhat interesting story goes completely off the rails by the second half of the game with pseudo sci-fi\/magical elements. (Think about Condemned: Bloodshot.)-The slow paced and "methodical" game play also gets replaced with large scale gun battles weather you like it or not. -The side quests and hidden caches give you nothing of value which doesn't incentivise exploration. You'll find better suits and guns naturally as your progress the main story. In addition to the lack-luster loot from the caches the devs thought it would be a good idea to make all of them empty until you find the corresponding PDA on random dead bodies. Only then will the items magically appear so if you wander off the beaten path, you will find a lot of empty chests.The side quests design choices are equally as puzzling as there is ZERO streamlining. You can pick up a quest from a vendor in one area but the target will be in a completely different area that could be locked because you haven't progressed the story far enough. OR the area is unlocked but it will be 5000 miles away from the quest giver. Want to spend 10 minutes of running to get a small cash reward for your time? I didn't think so. "But hows the atmosphere?", I hear you ask. It's pretty decent. The constant changing weather is cool as well as the day night cycle. The devs did a great job of designing a world you would want to explore but then set up a cache system that doesn't work with organic exploration. I really tried get myself immersed in the world but AI issues,\u2665\u2665\u2665\u2665\u2665\u2665side quests, annoying cache system yanked me right out.Also, DO NOT believe the hype regarding the difficulty of this game.
